A South African girls’ school is facing serious questions after a leaked voice recording showed parents objected to their daughters playing tennis against students from a Jewish school. The incident has sparked a heated debate about discrimination and values in education.

Roedean School, an elite Anglican girls’ school in Johannesburg, was scheduled to play a tennis match against King David Linksfield, a prominent Jewish school, in early February 2026. The match never happened. What started as a simple sports fixture has now become a major controversy.

According to a voice recording that surfaced online, a staff member from Roedean admitted that parents had put pressure on the school. These parents did not want their children to play against King David students because it is a Jewish school that supports Israel. The staff member explained that the school was facing pressure from its community. She said what is happening in society is now affecting decisions at school level.

In the recording, the Roedean representative said parents were objecting based on political grounds. They reportedly told the school that because the South African government took a stance against Israel, Roedean should follow that position too. The staff member mentioned she had to keep reminding parents that schools should remain apolitical and separate school sports from political pressures.

This explanation is very different from what Roedean initially told everyone. At first, the school said it could not field a team because of prior academic commitments and compulsory workshops. The school requested either a postponement or cancellation of the match due to these scheduling conflicts.

King David School has disputed this version of events. According to their account, Roedean’s head of school called early in the morning on February 2 and admitted that some parents did not want the match to happen because they would be playing a Jewish school. King David says there was no mention of academic workshops or prior commitments during that call. It was only later that day, in an email, that Roedean mentioned academic commitments as the reason.

The situation became more confusing when King David received another call saying the issue had been resolved and the match would go ahead. The team traveled to Roedean the next day, only to be told the players were unavailable because they were in geography workshops. This was a detail nobody had mentioned before.

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies strongly condemned the incident. The organization said this refusal to play Jewish students sends a message that hate and discrimination have become acceptable values. They stated that sport has the potential to unite people and celebrate diversity, but this opportunity was lost.

Roedean has since changed its explanation. In a new statement released on February 10, the school admitted it had approached King David to request a postponement. This was to resolve issues with students who had expressed reservations about playing the fixture. The school said King David could not accommodate the postponement, so the match had to be cancelled. Roedean apologized for not communicating this cancellation properly to the King David team.

The school maintains it is an apolitical institution and rejects all allegations of antisemitism. Roedean has appointed an independent investigator to look into the matter. The school is also investigating how the private conversation was recorded and distributed.

Both schools are now working with the Independent Schools Association of South Africa to resolve the dispute. Roedean plans to hold a town hall meeting with parents to discuss the situation. The matter remains under investigation as the two schools try to find common ground and move forward from this troubling incident.
