The City of Cape Town has taken a big step forward in bringing electricity to people who need it most. In a recent project, 395 homes in the Nomzamo area now have electricity for the first time. This is good news for families who have been living without power.

The project cost R4.9 million and was completed in just six months. The homes are located in the New Village Informal Settlement. For these families, getting electricity means their lives will become much easier. They can now use lights, charge phones, and keep food fresh in refrigerators.

Xanthea Limberg, who leads the energy department for the city, shared her excitement about the project. She said this is one of the largest projects the city has done recently to bring power to informal settlements. The city worked hard to make sure the installation was done quickly and properly.

This Nomzamo project is part of something bigger. Over the past few years, Cape Town has spent more than R35.6 million on bringing electricity to different areas. Through these efforts, 2,629 homes across the city now have power. The work shows that the city is trying to help communities in a real way.

Getting electricity makes daily life much simpler for these families. Before this, many people had to use candles and paraffin lamps for light. These methods are dangerous and have caused many fires in informal settlements. Now, with proper electricity, the risk of fires is much lower.

Children can study at night more easily now. Parents can cook using electric stoves instead of dangerous open flames. The whole family benefits from having a safer, easier way to live.

The city also offers a special deal for these new connections. Households can get up to 60 units of free electricity every month. This is called the Lifeline Tariff. It helps families save money on their energy costs. They use a prepaid system that is simple to understand and manage.

However, there are still challenges ahead. Limberg admitted that more people need electricity than the city can provide right now. Informal settlements keep growing, and new families need power connections. The demand is growing faster than the city can build new connections.

But the city is not giving up. They are already planning the next phase. Another 304 homes in Nomzamo will get electricity soon. The city is taking a step-by-step approach to reach as many families as possible.

There are some rules about where the city can build these connections. They can only provide electricity to settlements on land that the city owns. The ground must also be suitable for safe installation. In many older settlements, almost all the possible connections have already been made.

The benefits of having electricity go beyond just convenience. It brings dignity to families who have been struggling without basic services. Women and children are safer because they don’t have to walk in the dark. Businesses can operate more easily. The whole community improves.

The city thanked everyone who worked on the project. This includes city officials, contractors, and the residents themselves. Working together made it possible to complete the project in such a short time.

While 395 homes getting power might seem like a small number compared to the total need, it represents real change for those families. Each connection means a family can live in a safer, more comfortable home. It’s a simple thing that many people take for granted, but for these families, it changes everything.

The city promises to continue working on bringing electricity to more homes. They know the challenge is big, but they are committed to making progress, one connection at a time.
