The heartbreaking story of Cytheria Rex continues to shake South Africa’s justice system. The 17-year-old girl was raped and murdered in February 2009. Now, after 17 long years, her family is still waiting for her killers to be sentenced. This case has become the longest-running trial in any regional court in South Africa.

Cytheria’s life ended in the most horrible way. She was stabbed 39 times. Her body was then placed in a wheelie bin and dumped on a field in Kraaifontein, Cape Town. What makes this crime even more painful is that the people who killed her were once her friends. They were all teenagers when this terrible crime happened.

Five men were found guilty in November 2024. Their names are Virgil Sass, Oswill Grootboom, Imeraan Hendricks, Lee Cloete, and Rhonwen Rhode. The court used DNA evidence and witness statements to prove they were guilty. Two other accused men have died. Warren Robertson was shot in 2017, and Keenan Lewis died later.

The case should have been simple to finish. But it has been postponed more than 115 times since 2009. Each time the family goes to court, they hope it will be the last time. But something always goes wrong. Sometimes a lawyer is sick. Sometimes documents are missing. Sometimes the magistrate cannot come to court.

In February 2025, the family thought they would finally see justice. The sentencing was set for February 21, the same day Cytheria died 16 years earlier. Her mother, Jacqueline Rex, said she found peace in this plan. She believed God wanted the men to be sentenced on the anniversary of her daughter’s death. But even that did not happen. The court said some reports were still missing.

The case was supposed to be heard again in March 2025. But delays continued. Action Society, a group that fights for victims’ rights, has now raised its voice. They are demanding that justice must be served without more delays. They say 17 years is too long for any family to wait.

Jacqueline Rex has suffered through every single delay. She remembers the day her daughter died. She cried while the accused men laughed and smiled in court. Now she wants to see them cry. She wants them to feel the pain her family has felt for so many years.

Cytheria’s aunt, Cathleen van der Merwe, stood with the family through all these years. She said the struggle was real and hard. Only she, Jacqueline, and Cytheria’s father Keith kept fighting. They had very little support from other family members. But they never gave up.

This case shows how broken the justice system can be. More than 100 postponements over 17 years is not normal. It is not easy to understand why simple things like reports take years to complete. Legal experts say this kind of delay is not standard. It should never happen.

The National Prosecuting Authority has tried to explain the delays. They said lawyers were absent. They said accused persons were ill. They said documents were not ready. But none of these reasons make sense after 17 years. The family deserves better.

Former reporter Megan Baadjies covered this case from the beginning. She said she will never forget it. Every time she went to court, she knew the case would be postponed. It became a pattern that was easy to predict but hard to accept.

The magistrate who gave the guilty verdict was clear. He said all five men had the intention to rape and murder Cytheria. The evidence was strong. DNA samples were found. A witness saw everything. The men tried to throw the body over a wall. When that failed, they used a wheelie bin. These facts cannot be denied.

Now the question is simple. When will these men be sentenced? When will Cytheria’s family finally get closure? When will the justice system stop failing victims of violent crimes?

Action Society has called for urgent action. They want the Department of Justice to explain why this case has dragged on for so long. They want systems to be fixed so no other family suffers like this. They believe that justice delayed is justice denied.

Jacqueline Rex said something powerful. She said she thanks God for the 16 years He has helped her family stay strong. She said they felt hopeless many times. But their prayers kept them going. Now she wants to cry tears of joy, not pain.

The five convicted men showed no remorse when the verdict was read. They looked back at their families in the courtroom. They seemed to have no understanding of the pain they caused. This makes the crime even more cruel.

South Africa has a big problem with gender-based violence. Cases like Cytheria’s show that the system is not working fast enough. Victims and their families need justice quickly. Long delays make the pain worse. They also send a wrong message to criminals.

The family is still waiting. They have been waiting since 2009. They will keep waiting until the men are finally sentenced. No family should have to wait this long. No victim should be forgotten for 17 years.

This case must be a wake-up call. The justice system needs to work better. Courts need to move faster. Victims need to be treated with respect. And families like Cytheria’s need to know that their pain matters.

As the case continues, one thing is clear. Cytheria Rex will not be forgotten. Her family will keep fighting. And groups like Action Society will keep demanding justice. Because 17 years is too long. And enough is enough.
