Have you checked your bank statement lately? You might be paying for something you completely forgot about. Many bank customers are discovering they have been charged monthly fees for garage cards they no longer use. Some people have lost tens of thousands of rands over many years.
A garage card is a special card that helps you pay for fuel and car maintenance. Banks offer these cards as an add-on to regular credit cards. The problem is that many people signed up for these cards years ago and then forgot all about them. But the monthly fees kept coming.
Consumer expert Wendy Knowler has been helping people who discovered these hidden charges. One frustrated customer found out she had paid more than R35,000 in fees since 2010. That money was for garage cards she never used. The fees were taken from her account every single month for years.
Another case shows even worse losses. A customer paid around R62,000 over 13 years for a garage card service they had completely forgotten about. This is not an easy mistake to spot because banks do not always show these charges clearly on statements. The fees often get mixed in with other service charges. This makes it simple for customers to miss them completely.
Standard Bank has faced particular criticism for this issue. The bank promised to fix the problem by showing garage card fees separately on statements. This would make it easy for customers to see exactly what they are paying for. However, months have passed and the change still has not happened. Consumer advocates say this is unacceptable.
The monthly fee for a garage card can be R35, R100, or even more depending on the type of card. This might not seem like much money at first. But when you add it up over years, it becomes a huge amount. If you pay R100 every month for ten years, that is R12,000 gone from your account for nothing.
Many people do not realize they have garage cards linked to their credit cards. Sometimes bank staff signed them up during account applications years ago. The customer might have agreed without fully understanding what it meant. Other times, people got the cards when they actually needed them but then stopped using them. They forgot to cancel the service.
Banks have a responsibility to be transparent about charges. When fees are not shown clearly, customers cannot make informed decisions about their money. This becomes a simple matter of fairness. People should not have to hunt through complicated statements to find out where their money is going.
What can you do to protect yourself? First, check your bank statements carefully every month. Look for any charges you do not recognize. Second, call your bank and ask if you have any garage cards linked to your account. If you do not need them, cancel them immediately. Third, keep records of any conversations with your bank about canceling services.
If you discover you have been paying for a forgotten garage card, contact your bank right away. Ask for a refund of the fees you paid while not using the card. Many customers have successfully gotten their money back after complaining. Banks are more likely to help when customers speak up.
This situation shows why it is important to stay aware of your finances. Small monthly charges can add up to big losses over time. It is your money, and you have every right to know exactly where it goes. Do not let easy-to-miss fees drain your account for years without you noticing.
