Orlando Pirates beat AmaZulu 2-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night. The win pushes the Sea Robbers further ahead in the Premier Soccer League title race. They now have 35 points after 15 games. That is two points more than second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns. For AmaZulu and coach Arthur Zwane, the loss was a painful blow. It was a chance to climb above Kaizer Chiefs on the log, but that chance is now gone. The gap between them and the top of the table is now five points. But this was not just a simple football match. It sparked huge debates among fans about referees, penalties, and whether the league is being run fairly.
Relebohile Mofokeng opened the scoring for Pirates in the 16th minute. It was a beautiful team goal. Tshepang Moremi provided the assist. Mofokeng has been in excellent form lately. He scored the winning goal in the Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants. On Tuesday, he almost doubled his tally in the 55th minute. He received a pass at the edge of the box from another well-worked move. But his shot went wide. It was close, but not close enough.
Pirates kept pushing forward. Their pressure finally paid off again. This time, it was an own goal by AmaZulu’s Darren Johnson. Mofokeng was involved once more. He put so much pressure on the AmaZulu defense that Johnson had no easy option. The ball ended up in his own net. That made it 2-0 to Pirates. The win was sealed.
But the result did not sit well with everyone. AmaZulu fans were furious. They believe their team was robbed of a clear penalty during the match. One fan, going by the name dEAR, said it plainly on social media. “AmaZulu was robbed of a clear penalty,” the fan wrote. The anger was real. Many AmaZulu supporters felt the referee made a serious mistake. They believe that mistake changed the entire game. When you are chasing a goal and the referee does not give you what you deserve, it is not easy to keep your cool.
Other fans took a different view. A Pirates supporter named SibuExcel pointed out something interesting. “People should blame Sekhukhune and Marumo Gallants for beating Orlando Pirates in the first two games because after those defeats, Orlando Pirates are punishing every team they play,” the fan wrote. It is true that Pirates lost their opening two matches of the season. Since then, they have been on fire. They are playing with anger and determination. Every team they face is paying the price for those early losses.
Not everyone was impressed, though. One fan, Boss Yama Ben10, said something very direct. “Nobody cares. Nuno Santos is the best player in the league, and Sundowns are miles better.” This shows that even though Pirates are leading the table, some people still believe Mamelodi Sundowns are the superior team. Nuno Santos, the Sundowns midfielder, has been brilliant this season. His performances have earned him plenty of praise. For some fans, individual brilliance matters more than league positions.
Then there were the conspiracy theories. A fan named Yamkela Msimangu accused Pirates of cheating. “Your first goal was clearly offside, and the second goal was that the throw-in was not yours. You guys are cheaters, but the chairman’s team must win the league by crook or hook, bloody terrorists,” the fan said. Strong words. This kind of anger shows just how much passion South African football fans have. When things do not go their way, they speak their minds. Another fan named Gareth went even further. “Doesn’t shock me that this league is massively fixed,” he claimed. These are serious accusations. They show that trust in referees is very low among some supporters.
Even Pirates fans had concerns. A supporter named Dunga said the team needs to be more clinical in front of goal. “We need to be clinical in front of goals, knowing very well that we have Sibisi at the back; you will kill us one day,” Dunga warned. It is a simple but fair point. Pirates are winning, but they are not always finishing their chances. That could become a problem later in the season.
The match was more than just three points. It revealed deep divisions in South African football. Some fans believe in fair play. Others think the system is rigged. What is easy to see is that emotions run very high. Every decision matters. Every goal is analyzed. And every loss feels like betrayal to the fans who invest so much emotion into their teams. Orlando Pirates are on top for now. But the road ahead will not be easy or simple.
