Good news for South African students who applied for financial help. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, known as NSFAS, has shared exciting updates about funding for the 2026 academic year. This announcement brings hope to thousands of young people who want to study but need money to pay for their education.

NSFAS helps students from poor and working-class families go to university or TVET colleges. The organization makes it easy for talented students to achieve their dreams without worrying about money. They provide bursaries and loans to those who qualify.

The latest numbers show big progress. This week alone, NSFAS approved funding for 660,039 first-time students. This is more than last week when they approved 632,333 students. The increase shows that NSFAS is working hard to help more young people get education.

However, some applications still need attention. About 85,662 students have submitted their forms but are waiting for verification. Another 21,483 students need to send more documents. NSFAS is asking these students to submit their papers quickly. The simple message is clear: send your documents now to avoid delays.

Not everyone qualified for bursaries. Around 116,266 applications did not meet the requirements. But there is still hope for some of them. NSFAS offered loans to 13,052 of these applicants. This gives them another easy way to get money for their studies.

For students already in university, the news varies. About 436,924 returning students did well in their studies and will get funding again. Sadly, 109,761 students did not pass enough subjects. They cannot get more money from NSFAS. There are also 4,945 students waiting because their universities have not sent their results yet.

TVET college students also received updates. Out of 210,989 continuing students, 127,503 met the requirements and will get funding. Unfortunately, 79,461 students did not qualify. Some students have course information problems that need fixing.

The loan program is helping the “missing middle” group. These are students whose families earn too much for bursaries but not enough to pay for college. NSFAS received 26,538 loan applications. They approved 1,561 loans so far. About 20,368 applications did not qualify.

Many students filed appeals when they disagreed with their results. NSFAS received 91,937 appeals in total. They approved 10,445 appeals, giving these students another chance. They rejected 5,407 appeals because students did not meet the rules. About 27,893 appeals are still being reviewed.

Student accommodation is another important issue. NSFAS received 194,069 applications for housing. For TVET colleges, they approved 16,526 applications. For universities, they approved 39,127 applications. Many applications are still waiting for approval from colleges and landlords.

NSFAS is working on making the accommodation process better. They are building a new online portal. This will make it simple for students to apply for housing, check their status, and report problems. Everything will be in one place.

The organization also mentioned good news about recovered money. The Special Investigating Unit got back over R1.7 billion from institutions and students who received money incorrectly. This money will now help other students pay for their education.

Dr. Mugwena Maluleke, the Acting Chairperson of NSFAS, encouraged all students to stay informed. Students should check official NSFAS channels regularly. Those who need to submit documents should do it as soon as possible.

NSFAS continues to work with universities, TVET colleges, and student organizations. They want to make sure the process is fair and transparent. The goal is simple: help as many deserving students as possible get education.

Students who did not get funding this time should not give up. They can work hard and apply again in future. NSFAS keeps improving its systems to reach more people who need help.

The 2026 academic year shows that NSFAS is making real progress in helping South African youth. With over 660,000 students approved for funding, thousands of young people can now pursue their dreams of getting an education and building better futures for themselves and their families.
