John Steenhuisen has decided not to run for a third term as leader of South Africa’s Democratic Alliance. This news came on Wednesday and has created an exciting race to find his replacement. The party will choose its new leader at an upcoming federal congress.

Steenhuisen became the DA federal leader in 2019. He told his supporters and family in eThekwini that he feels he has done everything he promised when he first took the job. He recently visited the Union Buildings and realized it was time to move on. For him, this is not about giving up. It is about completing the work he set out to do.

The DA leader said he wants to focus all his energy on his current job as Minister of Agriculture. South Africa is facing its worst foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in history. Farmers need his full attention. Steenhuisen explained that it would not be fair to split his time between fighting this outbreak and running a campaign for party leadership over the next three months.

Political experts believe the DA will handle this change well. Analyst Sipho Seepe pointed out that the party has survived leadership changes before. Leaders like Lindiwe Mazibuko, Patricia de Lille, and Mmusi Maimane all left the DA in the past. The party continued to function and grow. Seepe said the DA does not depend on just one person to guide its direction.

Some people have criticized Steenhuisen for working too closely with the African National Congress in the Government of National Unity. However, Seepe said this view misses an important point. Coalition politics requires cooperation. The DA joined the government to weaken the ANC’s control over elections, not to save the ruling party. This goal will not change just because one leader steps down.

Seepe also noted something positive about Steenhuisen’s decision. In South African politics, many leaders refuse to leave office even when their time is up. It takes courage and wisdom to step down when you feel your work is done. This simple act shows good leadership.

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis praised Steenhuisen’s achievements. He said Steenhuisen took over the party during a very difficult period. He steadied the organization, helped it grow in 2024, and led it into national government for the first time. These are significant accomplishments that deserve recognition.

Hill-Lewis is now seen as a strong candidate to replace Steenhuisen. However, several other names are also being discussed. Communications Minister Solly Malatsi, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, and Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube are all possibilities. Gauteng opposition leader Solly Msimanga and uMngeni mayor Chris Pappas are also in the conversation. So far, none of these individuals has officially announced they will run for the position.

The timing of this announcement is interesting. It came just hours before the DA was set to reveal its Western Cape mayoral committee candidates. Local government elections are approaching, and the party has much work ahead.

Not everyone is happy with Steenhuisen’s time as leader. AfriForum chief executive Kallie Kriel said Steenhuisen became too aligned with the ANC after the election. He pointed to decisions on the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill and racial transformation policies as examples.

Despite the criticism, many believe Steenhuisen leaves the party in a better position than he found it. The DA grew its support in 2024 and became part of the national government. These outcomes were not easy to achieve in South Africa’s complex political environment.

In his final remarks, Steenhuisen spoke about love and letting go. He said the true test of loving something is knowing when to release it. For him, that time has arrived. The DA now enters a new chapter with fresh leadership on the horizon.

The party’s federal congress will be a crucial moment for South African politics. Whoever wins the leadership race will inherit a party with momentum and new responsibilities in government.
